Founded in 2013, Urban Blues Ranch is family-owned and specializes in Navajo Churro sheep. Most of our sheep are a black color, or what many would classify as “Blue.” Many of our sheep have a silvery shimmer that stands out on a newly-sheared sheep grazing in the sun.
Being smaller in size than other breeds, the Navajo Churro sheep are packed with resources. They can come in many different colors. Their wool is great for making yarn, felt or weaving. And their milk can be used for cheese. The churro meat tends to be less fatty and less greasy than other breeds of sheep which lends itself to a more mild flavor than what you might find in a local grocery store. And they are great “lawn-mowers.”
Some of our sheep have horns, some have scurs, and some don’t have either. Of the horned churro sheep, they can have two horns, four horns, or fused-four horns. Though there are a variety of features, what we love most about this breed is they are unique. The Navajo Churro breed was almost extinct.
The churros were a domestic breed of sheep introduced to the America’s during the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century. The sheep became an important part of the Navajo culture and others. Due to United States Government-sponsored flock reductions, this breed was nearly wiped out. But in the 1970’s a movement was begun to save the breed. Though the churro’s are no longer endangered, they are still considered a rare breed of sheep.
Based on the many uses for these sheep and the fact that they are fairly calm in manner, we decided that this breed is a perfect fit for us. We truly love our unique sheep.
